Description:
Shrub or small tree up to 15 m tall, young branches angled, hairless. Leaves elliptic-ovate to lanceolate, leathery, 5-9 cm long, hairless, finely acuminate at apex, base asymmetric; midrib plane to slightly impressed above, prominent beneath; primary veins 5-6 pairs, prominent beneath; margin entire or slightly wavy; petiole short and stout. Inflorescence few to many-flowered clusters on the stem and larger branches. Flower buds globose, pointed at apex; pedicel 7-14 mm long, hairless; calyx saucer-shaped, entire or slightly lobed; pseudocorolla splitting into 3-5 lobes, 14 mm long, reflexed at anthesis; stamens numerous; ovary globose, 4-7 locular; style 2-3 times longer than ovary; stigma 5-lobed, capitate. Fruit a capsule on a pedicel 7-15 mm long, globose, 1.5 – 2.5 cm diameter, red when mature opening into 5-6 valves.
