250 cm high; Shrub; Notes: Scrambling shrub, 250 cm high, with woody stems and twining upper branches. Leaves: very similar to 1403, but not hairy. Compound, leaflets oval, opposite, very slightly discolorous, mostly imparipinnate. Fruits: pods, clustered, brown and leathery, splitting to reveal oval red seeds with a black tip.

25 m high; Tree; Notes: Tree, 25 m tall. Single trunk, yellowish and somewhat powdery. Strong, paired, hooked thorns. Branches come out somewhat horizontally. Leaves large and feathery, with more than 15 pinnae pairs and a very large, squat, petiolar gland. Flowers: cream coloured, in long spikes. Fruits: pods papery - leathery, long and narrow, reddish brown.

Flowers: with 4 green sepals, boat-shaped, curled back. Two fused pinkish petals and 7 green stamens, whole flower very open. Fruits: pods large, dark, woody, with large black and red seeds inside.

Herb; Notes: Prostrate herb. Stems trailing, limp, slender but gibbose, terete, green to maroon-tinted, glabrous or with scattered, fine, white indumentum. Leaves opposite but normally tending to cluster, simple, sessile; lamina narrowly ovate to lanceolate, apex minutely apiculate, base cuneate, margin entire, somewhat revolute, midrib abaxially prominent, up to 40 x 30 mm, dull green to yellow-green to maroon-tinted, adaxially glabrous, abaxially with very sparse white adpressed indumentum. Flowers in axillary umbels, small, up to 3 mm in diameter; peduncle 2 - 45 mm long (usually elongating after flowering). Pedicel 4 - 10 mm long. Sepals 5, free, ovate, up to 3 x 1.5 mm, pink with hyaline margins. Petals lacking. Stamens 10; filaments pink; anthers cream-coloured. Common: especially in disturbed areas!.

Notes: Bulbs received from Prof. Dr. O. Khler for identification purposes. Veldkos of bushmen. Knolle with light, fibreous outer layer and numerous new bulbs, which are up to pea-size. Erect plant, up to 60 cm high. Flowers sulphur yellow, with very fine red stripes, which are unconspicuous. Bulbs were received in October 1968. Khwe-name: /on.

Notes: Spiny green leaves curling at tips. Flowers orange with yellow edges to petals.

Herb; Notes: Perennial herb, 30 cm high. Stem basally fairly woody; young stem green with scattered white indumentum, rigid and much branched from base. Leaves spirally arranged (occasionally clustered) simple, sessile; lamina narrowly ovate, apex acute, base cuneate, margin irregularly dentate, up to 30 x 3 mm (but usually much smaller), dull yellow-green with scattered, white indumentum, midrib abaxially conspicuous. Flowers in sparse terminal racemes, campanulate, slightly pendulous small, 4 mm in diameter, 7 mm long. Petals 5, fused, blue with white bases. Sepals 5, free, minute, 2.5 mm long, persistent. Stigma clavate, white, conspicuous. Fruit an elongate, cuneiform capsule, slightly falcate, 15 x 1-2.5 mm, sepals apically persistent.

When mature bright orange with distinct fruit, softly fleshy. Area of mopane woodland with scattered termitaria, numerous small pans. Soils largely clays and clay loams, blackish.

20 m high; Tree; Notes: Tree, 20 m tall, with rough bark, splitting into rectangular blocks, like a crocodiles skin. Leaves: bright green above, smooth and shiny, paler below. Flowers: axillary. Ovary with 2 rows of sepals (4 each, curled back), then a ring of creamy white petals standing erect, 10, then what looks like another ring of petals closed around the ovary, with the pistil protruding, no stigma. Fruit: oval, fleshy, with large pip. Orange/yellow.
