Herbs, sometimes woody at base. Leaves ovate or elliptic to broadly lanceolate, acuminate, rounded to cuneate and often unequal at base, petiolate. Inflorescence terminal and axillary racemes. Flowers, more or less zygomorphic. Bracts single, caudate. Bracteoles in pairs. Sepals 4, one free, 3 united with centre one slightly larger, accrescent at fruiting. Fruit lenticulate, sometimes slightly asymmetric, pericarp wrinkled. Seed discoidal; testa black. Worldwide: Three species in South America, one species in Africa and Madagascar. DRC: 1 taxon. |
