Gaertnera Lam.

Evergreen trees and shrubs. Leaves opposite, mostly distinctly petiolate, often rather coriaceous. Stipules intrapetiolar, joined, the sheath distinctly leafy or truncate or with 4-many setae. Inflorescence cymes, terminal, usually many-flowered; bracts and bracteoles present, the latter often adnate to the calyx. Calyx tube globose, obovoid, the limb campanulate, ± truncate or 5-lobed. Corolla mostly sweet-scented, funnel-shaped or ± salver-shaped; lobes 5, valvate. Fruit globose, obovoid, indehiscent, ± fleshy. Pyrenes and seeds similarly shaped, endosperm copious.

Worldwide: 40-50 species in Africa, Madagascar, Asia, East Indies and one in Australia.
