Description of the genus

Small trees, shrubs or annual or perennial herbs. Leaves opposite or whorled. Flowers 4-5(-6)-merous. Sepals persistent or caducous; intersepalar segments present, rarely 0. Petals obovate, rose, mauve, purple or violet, rarely white or orange. Stamens 8-10(-12). Ovary 4-5-locular. Capsule 4-5-valved. Seeds minutely cochleate, very numerous.
